Trips

We are contemplating some upcoming trips, including some camping in the near future and a Turner-clan get-together in the long-term. But first, I mentioned to Dad last week that we were considering making it to the Evans family reunion in a few weeks, but on further review, we won't be able to do it. It turns out that, eager to encourage my students to attend class right before the 4th of July, I made some assignments that make it impossible for me to skip town early for that weekend. I believe they call that poetic justice.

So instead we are planning a camping trip for the near future, and pictures and accounts will follow. If anyone nearby wants to join us on a camping trip sometime this summer, let us know.

But the most exciting idea--one that has been percolating for some time--was mentioned in my Fathers Day phone call to Dad. We talked about another trip akin to the 2005 Yellowstone trip, and I proposed doing something like that over Christmas, perhaps to the Grand Canyon or Mexico. I think other warm-weather locations would also be fun. So, my question is, what interest is there among the children of Roy & LeAnn in something like that this December? And, if the interest is as high as I hope, where should we go?

My preference would be to reserve a large cabin where we could all stay in separate rooms and then frolic in an outdoor wonderland. Zion, Arches, Grand Canyon all come to mind. Here is one possible destination near the Grand Canyon (there's also a photo album here). And here's a place near Zion (this cabin looks big enough for us all, even thought it says it sleeps up to 13; there's a big lodge that sleeps up to 20 as well). But your research assistance and input is requested.

I love family reunions. Is Idaho an option? Island Park isn't too far from Yellowstone and there are other cool places nearby. Here is a lodge we stayed at for our reunion last summer. http://winchesterlodge.com/

Becky, wierd way to angle for an invite, but whatever. I'm in favor of a less snowy place, but Summer srgues that Christmas deserves snow. She usually wins. The lodge looks nice. But ID? Really?

Yeah, can I come to your reunion? I thought it sounded kind of weird too, but I posted it anyway. Then I realized that you already went to Yellowstone and you want to go somewhere else. (I think Idaho is a great place for a vacation.)
I think Christmas deserves snow too. It was so weird to go through an entire winter and not see any snow. I really miss it. Funny though, I remember Summer in the winter at BYU. She went to bed with her hat and gloves on. (I have pictures to prove it.)

Um, snow? Really? Can't we do Christmas in Southern California? Jon and I both really like the idea of going somewhere new, Grand Canyon, Zion's, etc. Probably not Mexico (yet) because passports take a while to get these days. But, if that was an option, that's what we'd vote for =)

Chelle, let's plan for Mexico in a few years. Summer's suggesting Disneyland (which I loathe), and SoCal would be warm.
And Becky, I want this picture evidence...

In the back of my mind I seemed to remember that Kanab, UT (being central to some of the National Parks you mentioned) had some interesting lodging. I looked online and here is a link to some of them http://www.kanabutahlodging.com/ The accommodations include three places - any two of which would probably accommodate your entire family. Rock Cottage, Large and Small Town Homes. I added up the cost (using December pricing) and came up with a total rental cost for two places of about $1540 for all of you, which figures up to be about $96 per person for a five day stay. It's a start for ideas anyway. It also mentions a "Country Cottage", but could not find any info on the size or cost of that one.

I seem to be having a hard time emailing you, they are all getting returned to me as undeliverable...but, we'd love to do a baseball game with you! I might even run over and buy tickets early, they've seemed pretty busy this year. Not sure about Evanston, but we'll be at the reunion thingy for sure.

Do I get to vote? I think you should come to Disneyland. :) I imagine Roy and Stew would have a fabulous time at Disneyland together.
I will get those pictures for you over the 4th of July weekend. I haven't looked at them forever, it will bring back great memories.

Becky, I'm afraid that we got me and my dad in Disney land things would go very poorly; we both have a low tolerance for lines and crowds. But he at least might enjoy the kids' experience there. I'd likely just swear a lot...

No problem, I think you should send Summer and the kids over for a few days and we will go to Disneyland without you.
